Willpower

Willpower is a character's confidence, ability to overcome obstacles, and to remain mentally solid in rough situations. A characters Willpower equals Composure and Resolve added together. You can not purchase extra dots of Willpower, but you can increase one of those traits to increase it.

Willpower Uses

  • You may re-roll up to three regular dice (not hunger dice) on a roll that you have done. This can not only be used to gain enough successes, but you can potentially avoid a Messy Critical by rerolling 10s on non-hunger dice. There are a few exceptions to this however, you can not roll it on tracker pools or one-roll conflicts. One-roll conflicts have clear winners in each round of dice rolling and is an option when other conflict resolutions do not work.
  • You can use Willpower to take control of your character when they are frenzying or under some kind of supernatural ability, like Dominate or Presence.
  • You can use Willpower when your character is staked to make very small motions, like twitch a finger, open your eyes, blink, part your lips etc.
  • Willpower can also be used to ignore Health damage penalties for one turn. This also includes the Health penalty of Impairment.

Willpower Damage

When spending a willpower point you mark it as Superficial Damage (" / ") in the tracker. Superficial damage can include embarrassment or a bruised ego, but they don't have a lasting effect on your image or the other Vampire's image. However when you are targeted by a close friend or trusted figure, they do Aggravated Damage (" X ") to Willpower. These are returned in different ways. A vampire that has no Willpower left is considered Impaired, and have a -2 on all Social and Mental rolls. You still get to roll one dice checks however as normal.

Once you have filled your Willpower Tracker with superficial damage, any further damage to your willpower of either kind (Superficial or Aggravated) will convert a prevoius Superficial damage to Aggravated. A Willpower Tracker completely filled with Aggravated damage outside of social conflict has no additional effect from Impairment. If this happens inside of social conflict however, your character will completely break down in a manner that will have lasting social reprocussions.

Recovering Superficial Willpower Damage

  • At the beginning of a night you can gain back Willpower equal to the highest of your Composure or Resolve. An exception to this is when the ST has let you know that your Willpower will remain spent until the next event or night, typically from the results of downtime actions.
  • Once per night, an ST can award a point of Willpower if a character definitively plays out their Desire. If you this might be the case but has been over looked you may always inquire with the ST if you may restore a point. Please respect the ST's decision.
  • An ST may award one or more points of Willpower to a player that plays out a messy critical or beastial failure, a frenzy, or compulsion in a dramatic way.

Recovering Aggravated Willpower Damage

  • An ST can award a character one or more points of Willpower when significantly benefiting their Touchstones or upholding their Convictions against their own best interests.
  • At the end of a night, a player that has worked on their Ambition can gain back a Willpower towards Aggravated damage.
